New Cookbook category: budget gourmet
Send us your recipes for The Eagle's annual contest.

The Wichita Eagle
Good cooking is nice, but good cooking on a budget is a thing of beauty.
That's why "Budget Gourmet" is the special category for this year's Wichita Eagle Holiday Cookbook contest.
In this category, we're looking for recipes that you can make for $10 or less. They can be for any kind of dish -- appetizer, entree, dessert -- and for any number of servings.
But getting the most value out of the money spent for the recipe will be one of the criteria by which it is judged, along with taste, appearance, creativity and clarity of cooking directions.
Other recipe categories
• Starters: These can be anything you start a meal with, from appetizers to soups and salads.
• Main dishes
• Desserts
• Holiday favorites: These can be any type of festive dish and could feature a popular flavor of the season. Last year's top placers in this category, for example, were Roast Pork Adrien, Tiramisu-Toffee Dessert and Butternut Squash and Potato Mash with Thyme.
As always, we'll test recipes and award prizes to the first-, second- and third-place winners in each category. We'll publish the winners and many other reader recipes in our 53rd edition of our Holiday Cookbook in November.
Watch The Eagle for more details about this year's prizes.
The rules
You can submit entries by regular mail or e-mail.

• Category in which recipe is to be judged
• Name of sender
• Address, including ZIP code
• Daytime phone number
• Title of recipe
• List all ingredients, followed by directions in standard recipe form.
• Please conclude the entry with personal comments about the recipe's origin or any other comment you care to share.
Only Kansas residents are eligible. Eagle employees and their families are not eligible.
Each contestant can enter only one recipe per category. All recipes must be mailed in the same envelope, postmarked by Sept. 19.
